The Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club was founded in 1924 by Seth Milliken for his children and their friends, and its first members were mostly under the age of 15. The club's traditional mandate to teach children to sail was expanded when in 2003 the Junior Program became a nonprofit corporation, the Kollegewidgwok Sailing and Education Association, called KSEA Sailing School. As KSEA it is our purpose to be the sailing school, not just for KYC, but for the greater Blue Hill Community. Our goal is to introduce children (and, we hope, adults) to the love of sailing (both recreational and racing) and the sea, and to promote responsibility for stewardship of the marine environment. Scholarships are available to those who need them, and we will make every effort to accommodate special needs. Over 150 children participate in our regular program every summer. In 2005 we started Learn to Sail Week, a week of introductory classes to beginners of all ages at a nominal cost.
Tuition from regular sailing classes covers the cost of instructors, and KYC makes a generous and essential contribution to our operating expenses. But we have boats-- over 30 Optimists, 12 420s owned jointly with GSA Sailing Team, and our trusty old Whalers-- and floats, trailers and racks to maintain and replace when necessary. Your contribution of any amount will be gratefully accepted and used to make our already excellent program even better. KSEA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, so any donations are tax-deductible. Thank you!
